UN Women Regional Center for Latin America and the Caribbean, furthering the General Assembly Resolution (64/289) and UN Women Strategic Plan (2011-2013); invites regional women’s organisations, civil society organizations and networks of the Caribbean to submit candidates to be a member of the Civil Society Advisory Group during the 2012-2013 period, based on the criteria agreed upon in region wide consultations and included in the annexed Terms of Reference.

Port of Spain, Trinidad: The YWCA of Trinidad and Tobago with the support of the UN Women hosted “Teen Talk - Perspectives on Gender Based Violence” on March 09, 2012.
The initiative, held in observance of the 101st Anniversary of International Women’s Day (IWD), was aimed at encouraging youth and in particular young women to claim their rights and take a stand against gender based violence.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community Secretariat dovetailed the half-yearly meeting of CARICOM Conference of Heads of Government to launch a variety of creative products that it intends to use in a public education campaign against Gender-Based Violence.
Continuing to treat women’s rights as matters for the private sphere and therefore “beyond the reach of the law” remains the single biggest threat to women’s progress.

Port-au-Prince,Haiti: On the occasion of International Women's Day several United Nations' agencies - UNDP, UNFPA, UNESCO and UN Women supported a National Forum organized by the Ministry of Women's Affairs and Women’s Rights (MCFDF) to support women's voices.
The stated purpose of this forum was to guarantee that public policies and programs would effectively address the strategic interests and practical needs of women. This forum was the culmination of consultations held in all municipalities. It brought together 600 delegates from all of the regions.

This sense of mission drives me and millions of people around the world to pursue justice and inclusion. Looking back at the first year of UN Women, I applaud every individual, government and organization working for women's empowerment and gender equality. United Nations, New York —The 56th session of the Commission on the Status of Women will open on 27 February at United Nations headquarters, focused on the theme of empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, sustainable development and current challenges. The Commission will agree on urgent actions needed to make a real difference in the lives of millions of rural women. These recommendations will also provide input into other policy forums, such as the Rio+20 Conference in June 2012.

Calls for global mobilization and commitment to womens rights as political and economic changes continue worldwide
United Nations, New York At a press conference in New York today, UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet called for galvanizing greater commitment and action for women and gender equality, as political and economic upheaval threaten progress on womens rights (remarks enclosed here). She called the press conference to report on the first year of operations of UN Women. With austerity measures, budget cuts and political changes impacting womens lives, worldwide, Ms. Bachelet outlined the action agenda of the organization in her first press conference of 2012.
